Salem -- capital of Oregon and seat of Marion County -- stretches out amid the fertile Willamette Valley between the Cascade Mountains and the Pacific Coast, with wineries, gardens, and historic sites offering discovery at every turn. Parks are plentiful, from Salem's Riverfront Park downtown to nearby Bush's Pasture Park, Minto-Brown Island Park, and Willamette Mission State Park. Attractions range from the Oregon State Capitol to Eco Earth and the Willamette Queen Sternwheeler at Riverfront Park, also featuring a carousel. Golfers revel in course designs from alpine to classic parkland layouts along banks of the Willamette. Other attractions include Mission Mill Museum, Mount Angel Abbey, the Marion County Historical Society Museum, and the Bush House Museum. Apart from the Oregon State Fair at Salem's fairgrounds, annual events include the Salem Art Festival & Fair, Salem Film Festival, Salem World Beat Festival, Oregon AG Fest, and the Oregon Wine & Food Festival. Farmers markets are popular including the Salem Saturday Market at Summer and Marion streets north of the capitol, the Wednesday Farmers' market downtown on Chemetketa Street, Bauman's Farm & Garden, Schlechter Farms, and E.Z. Orchards Farm Market on Hazel Green Road. Wineries abound, too, with names like Ankeny Vineyard, Evesham Wood Vineyard & Winery, Honeywood, Orchard Heights, Silver Falls, Stangeland Vineyards, Willamette Valley Vineyards, and Witness Tree Vineyard. Salem ranks as a key Willamette Valley shopping destination, with retailers like Nordstrom to one-of-a-kind downtown shops near the historic façade of the Ladd & Bush Bank. Downtown malls, Salem Center and Reed Opera House, along with the Lancaster Mall feature more than 200 popular and specialty stores. Greater Salem accommodations include more than 1,900 guest rooms from inns and lodges to downtown hotels with meeting facilities.
